Book Review

Flora & Ulysses - The Illuminated Adventures

My literacy class just finished reading aloud Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventure by Kate DiCamillo. It was a big hit with my class! Everyday, students were begging to read more of the story. Students would try to finish their work early so we can squeeze in 5 more minute of the story at the end of class.

Why is this book so popular?

It's about a squirrel. Not just any squirrel… a squirrel with superhero powers.

The story starts out with Tootie getting a large indoor/outdoor fancy vacuum for her birthday, the Ulysses 2000X model. She turns it on and it takes her for a ride right outside!

And it so happens… a squirrel crossed the path of the vacuum.

Poof! The vacuum sucked up the squirrel!

Flora, the main character of the story, witnessed the whole incident and ran right outside. She shook the vacuum and out came the squirrel missing a lot of hair.

This was no ordinary squirrel. It could lift the vacuum with a single paw!

So the story begins… Ulysses… a squirrel named after the vacuum model, posed superhero strength and a talent at writing poetry. Flora and Ulysses together set out to vanquish the villains! (Sort of).

The book is a mixture of graphic novel and fantasy, fun to read and definitely a unique book.

Book Week Upcoming in April

My school is hosting a school-wide reading event when students come back from spring break. For this celebration, each class are to decorate their classroom door of a favorite book.

Guess what book my literacy class picked? Yep.

This is the result of my students' creativity. Each student picked their favorite part of the book, we project it using the document camera onto the SmartBoard and they traced the picture then colored it in. It looks pretty cool and I admire their creativity!

Check out their work.
